Does My Business Need to Be on Social Media?

So many of my clients ask me: Do I need to be on social media to promote my business?

The short answer is, yes. But it’s a little more complicated than that.

Find out how to utilize social media in your business, and then implement a strategy that works for you.

Here are some useful tips.

Make sure you have the time to create content

Building an effective social media strategy takes time and effort. You need to be able to put in at least a few hours per week – depending on your business model – to create content, post comments, and interact with your followers and other users on the platform. You can’t just post when you want to promote something. Instead, you need to post valuable content your audience will enjoy and find to be valuable.

Find out where your audience lives

Does your target audience lived on LinkedIn? How about X (Twitter), Instagram, or TikTok? Once you do your research and discover where your audience hangs out, focus on those platforms. Hint: If you’re a visual company, like a restaurant or a clothing retailer, Instagram and TikTok are key. If you’re a writer, X is great, and if you do B2B, LinkedIn is the best platform for your content. You can have a presence on all platforms, but just make sure you really hone in on one of them and then repurpose your client for those other sites.

Create community on these platforms

Social media platforms also track how much you’re interacting with others. If you go on sites to post but never comment on other accounts, you’re going to have a hard time building your following. Again, honing in one platform where you spend most of your time is going to be helpful when it comes to building your community.

Include next steps for your audience

Posting up content is great, but there needs to be a sell as well. Along with including your Linktree, website, and contact info in your social media bios, include calls to action in some of your posts that let people know how to interact with you and your business. For instance, you could say, “Want to learn more? Visit our website” at the end of a post or link to your Calendly for a free consultation.
